How James Bond came to Sölden

When location scouts for James Bond flew over the Alps, their eyes were caught by the spectacular ice Q in Sölden - the start of an extraordinary collaboration. In January and February 2015, a 500-strong film crew arrived to shoot action-packed scenes high up on Gaislachkogl and in Rettenbachtal. After filming was completed, the visionary idea of integrating a cinematic James Bond installation directly into the summit of the Gaislachkogl next to the ice Q restaurant soon emerged. The idea became reality - and Sölden was enriched by a world attraction.

Only life writes thrillers like this

The works

In autumn 2017, construction work on the world's newest James Bond exhibition was in full swing. However, an unexpectedly early onset of winter with massive amounts of snow led to an abrupt halt in construction. The access road for transporting materials was closed, which brought work to a standstill, and the planned opening date for the 2017/18 winter season was literally buried in snow. Finally, in July 2018 the exhibition opened its doors.

The architecture

With the neighbouring ice Q buildings and the Gaislachkoglbahn mountain station in view, the Obermoser architects had to find an unusual solution. The idea of integrating the museum directly into the mountain was initially a challenge and required intensive discussions to convince the rights holders of this vision.

The result is impressive across the board: the rooms are simple and architecturally minimalist. On an exhibition area of 1,300 m², the view to the outside is only open at selected points - but these views are all the more expressive and breathtaking. With the stylishly furnished rooms, you could almost forget that you are in the middle of the mountains, as the ambience is more reminiscent of James Bond's headquarters.
