Company history
From vision to success
Since its foundation in 1948, Bergbahnen Sölden has developed from a small cable car company into one of the leading tourism businesses in the Alps. Over the past 75 years - an anniversary celebrated in 2023 - Sölden has risen to become the winter sports destination with the highest number of overnight stays in Austria. Bold visions, pioneering innovations and numerous records characterise the company's path. Join us on a journey through history and discover how Sölden has developed into a globally sought-after tourist destination.
How it all started
The success story of Bergbahnen Sölden began in 1948 with the construction of a 2.2 kilometre long single chairlift to Hochsölden. This lift was the third of its kind in Tyrol and also the longest in Austria. The people of Sölden demonstrated exceptional inventiveness by converting wartime equipment into cable car technology: the drive motor came from an army tank and the 42 supports were made of wood.
Initially, 120 people could be transported per hour. Locals even had the opportunity to pay for their lift tickets with butter. This early phase, characterised by improvisation and a pioneering spirit, laid the foundations for one of the most impressive success stories in Tyrolean tourism. The legendary single chairlift remained in operation until 2012, when Sölden had already risen to become the number one winter sports resort with the highest number of overnight stays.
Pioneering spirit & visionaries
The visionaries Hans Falkner, Hermann Gurschler and Martin Riml (from left to right), also known as the ‘three hussars’, took over the company when it was in danger of failing economically. With great personal commitment and entrepreneurial courage, they took Bergbahnen Sölden to new heights.
By 1962, they had built 12 lifts, which were accessible with a single ski pass for the first time - a first in the region. Thanks to their innovative spirit, the mountain railways developed into one of the leading cable car companies in Austria and set standards in the entire Alpine region.
Hans Falkner in particular, also known as Buggls Hans, played a key role. The trained baker and successful cattle dealer recognised the importance of high-altitude ski resorts early on and cultivated close contacts with regional politicians. These strategic partnerships enabled decisive milestones such as the construction of the Gaislachkoglbahn cable car and the development of the glacier ski area, including the highest glacier road in Austria.
75 years of innovation & success
In 2023, Bergbahnen Sölden celebrated its 75th anniversary - an anniversary that underlines the company's long tradition and continuous spirit of innovation. From its humble beginnings to a modern tourism company, Bergbahnen Sölden has not only shaped the region but also set international standards.
Today, Bergbahnen Sölden stands for tradition and progress, for local solidarity and global success - and continues to write its history with every new vision.
